What we are doing
The objectives of this pilot programme are: • to protect the public from some of the most dangerous people in society; and • to provide appropriate and effective services to improve mental health outcomes, enabling positive progress. The Programme The Programme, included in the Government’s manifesto, is a ground breaking initiative aimed at supporting public protection through the development of pilot treatment services for dangerous offenders whose offending is linked to severe personality disorder. The DSPD programme is aimed at people who have committed a violent and/or sexual crime and have been detained under the criminal justice system or current mental health legislation. The DSPD programme is about working with some of the most difficult and dangerous persons in society, and faces a range of challenges in terms of assessment, treatment and management of this group, the delivery of effective services and the longer term prospects of reducing the risk of re-offending. We are working to address these and to keep people informed and updated about developments. This website is part of that process. The programme is currently setting up pilot projects in prison and high secure hospital settings to identify, assess and treat people who meet the DSPD criteria. There are now four pilot units open at Broadmoor and Rampton Hospitals, Frankland and Whitemoor prisons, assessing and treating offenders who meet the DSPD criteria. In total there are now over 300 places, and the assessment and treatment programmes are under active development. |
