National Public Protection Conference

On the 13th October, Marc Owen (DSPD programme central team) and Dave Matthews (Manager of Westgate Unit, HMP Frankland) gave a presentation at the prison service's National Public Protection Conference which took place at Newbold Revel. Front-line staff involved in public protection issues nationally were given an overview of the programme, told about the work of the Westgate Unit and explained how to make referrals.

Personality Disorder & Approved Premises Provision

A Conference organised by the National Probation Service and the Dangerous and Severe Personality Disorder (DSPD) Programme Unit for managers of Approved Premises was held in Birmingham on 12th October 2004.

The aims of the conference were to provide:

- information about personality disorder
- describe effective ways of working with people with personality disorder
- to understand ways of effectively engaging with local mental health service providers

The conference was Chaired by Hilary Thompson, Chief Officer, West Midlands Probation area and presentations were delivered by:

Dr Jackie Craissati - What is personality disorder? How do we recognise it? What is the link with offending?

Nick Benefield - Engaging effectively with local mental health service providers; health structures, how to engage effectively with local providers.

Professor Tom Fahy - Working with personality disorder in the community.

During the afternoon there was a choice of 4 workshops to attend, each being held twice:

Maria Duggan - Balancing public protection with patient treatment

Alison Longwill - Managing continuity of care from prison to the community

Gill Attrill - Understanding Psychopathy and Working effectively with Psychopathic Clients

Professor Len Bowers - Positive attitudes to Personality Disordered People

This was seen as a very useful conference highlighting that individual concerns were also National concerns. More time in the near future to be set aside to discuss practicalities as well as policy issues and to ensure efficient communication pathways between prison, probation and mental health bodies.
