HMP Whitemoor

The work being done by prison staff at March’s Whitemoor prison’s DSPD Unit was acknowledged recently with a presentation of the Butler Trust Award by the Princess Royal at Buckingham Palace.

This was a two day event that commenced on the 18 March with six staff, Martin Lomas (Governing Govenor of Whitemoor), Lisa Tilling (Butler Trust liaison for Whitemoor), Jamie Bennett (Deputy Govenor HMP Gartree – Ex DSPD Project Manager HMP Whitemoor), Dr Valerie Hawes (Consultant Psychiatrist DSPD unit), Paul Rushbrook (Officer – Intervention Unit) & Mick Hignett (Officer –Assessment Unit), travelling to London for a meal organised by the Trust.

They attended Buckingham Palace on the following day to receive their awards. Officers Rushbrook and Hignett had an opportunity to discuss the work of the unit with the Princess Royal and all were at the palace for over 3 hours.

The award is one of 33 presented to prison staff across the United Kingdom, Phil Wheatley, director general of HM Prison Service  said:

“This year’s winners are outstanding examples of the exceptionally good work being carried out by staff of all grades in the Prison Service. This good work continues despite the challenges presented by record high population levels. It is good to see public recognition of the demanding and complex work that prison staff are involved in.”

Broadmoor Hospital

The 10-bed pilot ward at Broadmoor Hospital has been open since April 2003. The ward is run by a multi-disciplinary team, using cognitive-behavioural interventions as the basis of the therapeutic programme, focussing on risk, criminogenic need and responsivity.

Construction of the 70-bed DSPD Unit is in progress; all of the steel work is up, the block work is in progress and the building is quickly taking shape. The Paddock Centre will open in Summer 2005.

HMP Frankland

Prisons and probation minister Paul Goggins officially opened the Dangerous and Severe Personality Disorder Unit at HMP Frankland on 6 May.

The unit will house up to 80 prisoners, and is the last of the 4 sites to commence assessment.

Paul Goggins said:

"The DSPD unit at Frankland is part of a robust public protection initiative. Public protection is the central aim of the programme, but it will also help us work towards identifying effective interventions for this difficult and challenging group and increase our knowledge of what works in the treatment, care and management of personality disorder."
